The USDA, Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Arid-Land Agricultural Research Center, Plant Physiology and Genetics Research Unit in Maricopa, AZ, is seeking a full time, permanent, Research Agricultural Engineer. The salary for this position is at the GS-12/13 level, $75,741.00 - $117,086.00 per year.
The mission of this Unit is to increase the productivity, profitability, and sustainability of agriculture in arid-climates by developing new germplasm for both traditional and alternative crops and by improving plant responses to abiotic stresses and to changes in the global environment.
The incumbent will:
provide leadership in the development and application of field-based, high-throughput phenotyping technologies and “big data” analytics, with an emphasis on characterizing the effects of heat and drought on crop performance in the field;
work closely with plant breeders to help characterize genetically diverse plant populations and collect data for genome-wide association studies to gain insight to genes and markers involved in plant stress responses; and
develop a computational “ecosystem” that links sensor data collection, data storage, data pipeline development, georeferencing, and quality control analysis, with the end-goal of supporting the phenomics-based crop improvement effort.
