The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) invites applications for an appointment under the Educator Track Scheme to start in August 2017. The candidate must in addition to having expertise in Structural Engineering show strong indication of teaching achievement as evidenced by a positive impact on student learning in higher educational settings, as well as a commitment to collegial sharing of their work within the local educational environment.
As education is a core mission of the University, the Educator Track is conceived as a career progression path for excellent teachers and educational leaders. Candidates for the appointment of Lecturer and above should possess a PhD degree. For the appointment of Associate Professor, a PhD degree shall be the minimum requirement. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in structural engineering with focus in structural concrete or steel-concrete composites.
In NUS, the general expectations for commitment to teaching for an Associate Professor (Educator Track) is 2 times the normal teaching commitment of a Tenure Track staff, although the precise teaching commitment will be decided on a case-by-case basis depending on the needs of the Department, and the aptitude, potential, activity and achievements of the individual with respect to research. For Educator Track staff, some record of disciplinary research (particularly research that informs teaching) is considered an advantage and not a requirement on the Educator Track.
As the construction industry in Singapore has adopted the European codes (EC) in design, the candidate is expected to incorporate EC codes of practice in his undergraduate and graduate teaching. Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or completion of the PPE examination with plans to pursue PE registration, and professional experience are desirable. Candidates having expertise with teaching in an online or flipped classroom environment and/or good industry experience will have an added advantage. Any evidence of impact in higher education settings will also be an advantage.
The CEE Department at NUS is consistently ranked amongst the best academic institutions internationally and strives to provide high quality CEE education and conduct impactful research to contribute towards both the fundamental and translational aspects of civil engineering. It has about 50 tenure-track faculty and more than 100 research staff. NUS is a comprehensive university and its Faculty of Engineering has 8 major engineering departments. It provides a conducive environment for hosting multi-disciplinary research and educational programmes. Besides offering the B.Eng. (Civil) and B.Eng. (Environmental) degree programmes, the CEE Department also hosts 6 M.Sc. coursework and the M.Eng. and Ph.D. research degree programmes. The current enrolment in CEE programmes stand at about 800 undergraduate and 500 graduate students.
