The Charlotte Department of Transportation is seeking an effective team player with a positive and flexible attitude for the position of Signal Systems Engineer. This engineer develops signal timing plans for coordinated systems and isolated intersections, including special events and detours; is available to perform field observations of traffic operations and fine-tune signal timing plans at times as early as 6:00 am and as late as 7:00 pm during the week, as well as, for special circumstances on the weekend; in conjunction with developing and implementing signal timing plans, identify intersection deficiencies that detract from the safe and efficient operation of the roadway system; evaluate requests for modifications to existing signal operations, as well as, requests for new traffic signals; is a team member in the Capital Improvement and Land Development Programs; provide expertise on signal timing and operations to consultants performing traffic analysis; write clear, concise responses to citizen inquiries about signal phasing and timing issues; evaluate the effect on signal operations of proposed geometric, signing and pavement marking modifications at intersections; review signal design plans prepared by others to ensure correctness of signal phasing, timing and detection information; periodically staff the Traffic Management Center when assigned personnel are absent at times as early as 6:00 am and as late as 7:00 pm during the week; and perform other related duties as required. Applicants must have graduated from a four-year college or university with a degree in civil, electrical, or transportation engineering. EI certification preferred. It is preferred, but not required, to have a minimum two years of experience in the traffic engineering field with progressively increasing responsibilities, including task management with a fundamental understanding of signal system operations and analysis. A graduate degree focused on traffic engineering and operations can be substituted for two years of experience.
