The Austin Transportation Department’s Transportation Engineering Division within the City of Austin has an opening for a full-time Supervising Engineer.
Under minimal supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment, this position will perform highly complex engineering functions that include implementing traffic control devices, designing transportation system improvements, and responding to customer service requests in the Transportation Engineering Division on behalf of the Austin Transportation Department (ATD).
This position will lead the following duties for south Austin:
Supervision: oversee workload for team members; assist with the resolution of the more challenging transportation engineering issues and requests; train, discipline, develop employees, and review performances
Public Interface: represent ATD at Boards & Commissions, City Council meetings, neighborhood meetings; respond to these stakeholders in written and verbal communication
Engineering Operations: oversee customer service requests; lead engineering studies; provide technical assistance to other ATD divisions and City of Austin departments
Engineering Programs: design and review projects for bond initiatives (Intersection Safety, Corridor Mobility, Safe Routes to School, etc.) and other programs (Speed Management, Transit Efficiency, Pedestrian Crossings, etc.)
Development Review: review transportation impact analyses, license agreements, public easement releases, and ROW vacations.
The ideal candidate will be a versatile engineer and supervisor, bringing the following preferred qualifications to implement transportation system improvements to accommodate all users.
Proficiency in transportation engineering fundamentals: respond to citizens’ transportation concerns, develop appropriate solutions utilizing established engineering guidelines, conduct transportation engineering studies.
Proficiency in team working and problem-solving skills with internal and external members to accomplish organizational goals.
Ability to make decisions in conformance with established practices.
Ability to provide technical input and strategic direction to multiple work teams by coordinating across ATD divisions, other departments, contractors, external stakeholders, and partner agencies.
Skill in effective written and verbal communication with internal and external stakeholders, including meetings and public events.
Skill in organization to simultaneously manage and monitor multiple projects and tasks.
Skill in Synchro, SimTraffic, MS Office, ArcMap.
Knowledge of City of Austin Standard Details, Standard Specifications; TMUTCD and other relevant design documents and best practices.
Minimum qualifications include graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering, plus eight (8) years related experience acquired either before and/or after licensing as a professional engineer, two (2) of which were in a lead or supervisory capacity.
