General Purpose:
The Senior Civil Engineer serves under the general direction of the Public Works Director and/or City Engineer. The position is responsible for providing professional journey level engineering assistance to the City. Particular emphasis may be in the areas of general engineering, transportation planning, traffic engineering, subdivision and private development plan checking, assessment district engineering, permit issuance, capital project planning, design and construction management, and public works inspection services.

The ideal candidate for the Senior Civil (Traffic) Engineer position is a knowledgeable, proactive, and solution-oriented transportation professional who thrives in a dynamic municipal environment and demonstrates strong technical expertise in transportation planning, traffic engineering, traffic operations, and project delivery.
The ideal candidate has substantial experience in transportation planning efforts such as corridor studies, active transportation improvements, traffic impact analysis, circulation planning, safety programs, and multimodal mobility improvements. They are experienced in reviewing plans, specifications, traffic studies, and engineering analyses for capital improvement and private development projects. They are skilled in traffic signal operations, signal timing and coordination, traffic safety analysis, intelligent transportation systems, and operational improvements that enhance safety, mobility, and efficiency throughout the transportation network.
Experience preparing and administering grant-funded projects, securing transportation funding, developing capital improvement projects, preparing technical reports, and coordinating with regional and state agencies is highly desirable. The successful candidate is comfortable managing multiple priorities and exercising sound engineering judgment in addressing complex transportation issues.
This candidate is an effective communicator and collaborative leader. They can provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineering and technical staff while coordinating with internal departments, consultants, developers, utilities, regional agencies, and the public. They are able to present complex technical information and recommendations clearly to management, commissions, City Council, and other decision-makers.
